More than 20 years ago, I got a small mosaic gift from my son. This small object inspired me greatly and I wanted to learn how to make such items myself. But the class fee was very expensive.
Years later, I was told that a lady had set up a 3-day program of mosaic in the church ladies group. Even though I missed the first class, I was still excited to go and learn. Thank God I did, for I started learning the basic way of doing mosaic. But the materials of tiles and tools were very expensive!! I tried to use colourful beans and small stones instead of tile, but it was not the same.
At the time, I was also working as a volunteer in a Red Cross Shop. I noticed one particular lady who used to come regularly to buy lots of plates, cups, vases and even chipped dishes. My curiosity was piqued, so one day I asked her what she did with this purchase. She told me she was a mosaic lover. Those dishes were used for creating mosaic objects!
She opened my eyes to this form of art and drawings after visiting her house, which looked like a gallery.
Inspired by this resourceful lady, I started using cheap, second hand dishes with a variety of colours to create the mosaic effect. I got so much pleasure in this art that I have since then been creating many objects, from broken pieces of crockery, for the last 20 years. I call myself a ‘Mosaic Addict’.
